Every so often I rant about how everyone should read poetry if they want their writing to move to the next level. So here’s a poem for you, one I just ran into today on Melanie’s blog, by Theodore Roethke. I’ve loved this poem ever since I studied poetry in college. Do you read poetry–ever? Favorite poem? Post a link if there is one.
The Waking
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I feel my fate in what I cannot fear.
I learn by going where I have to go.
I hear my being dance from ear to ear.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there,
And learn by going where I have to go.
The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair;
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
To you and me, so take the lively air,
And, lovely, learn by going where to go.
What falls away is always. And is near.
I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow.
I learn by going where I have to go.
