Upcoming Speaker Series events

On Tuesday, July 16, poet Kim Dower will join us for a night of poetry. Kim is former West Hollywood poet laureate and has much to teach about what makes a good poem and how poetry feeds all writing, even if you have no intention of ever writing poetry.

Then, on August 20, Janet Fitch returns along with Leland de la Durantaye, to talk about the art, craft, and business of writing fiction.

I trust both events will help to make your summer a gratifying literary season. Visit the speaker series page for more info and to sign up. Seats are limited. Hope to see you there!

Dispatch from the Typosphere

Thank  you, Richard Polt, author of The Typewriter Revolution, for your wonderful book and inspiration. If you saw the documentary, California Typewriter, you’ve seen Richard and were introduced to the Typewriter Manifesto. The following was written using a Hermes 3000 typewriter and it was inspired by my Literary Posse students.

Debut novelists Yoojin Grace Wuertz and Julianne Pachico on Writers on Writing, KUCI-FM

Debut novelists Yoojin Grace Wuertz, author of Everything Belongs to Us, and Julianne Pachico, author of The Lucky Ones, join Marrie Stone.

Grace discusses the politics and culture of South Korea in the 1970s. Julianne talks about growing up in Columbia, and how perceptions of that country have changed over the past ten years. Both women talk about how being bilingual enriches their craft, and how writing about the countries that feel closest to them have changed their understanding of those places . . . or not.

Revision tool: Shrink your manuscript

I’m revising my novel and am looking for tips, so I went online and came across this idea by Darcy Pattison. It calls for shrinking your manuscript so you can see the structure, see your strongest chapters, character arc, etc. This 20-minute YouTube video shows you how.  Let me know how it works for you and if you come across any other good methods that help you revise, report back with those, too.
